Rules of 'Beasty Beach'

Summary: As a seagull you search for food on the beach. During ebb you can find food, but once the flood is going fast it is time to go back to your nest.

Turns: Players take alternate turns. Each turn you move to one sea animal to eat. (Only in your last turn you go back to the start spaces.) Each eaten animal brings you energy. Both players start with an energy level of 10. The number of dots near the sea animal shows you how much energy they give you. A mussel (white) brings 1 energy point, a shrimp (grey) brings 2 points, a fish (turquoise) 3 points, a sea-star (red) 4 and a crab (brown) 5 points. But each space you move over the beach costs 1 energy point. You cannot walk over a hexagon containing a sea animal without stopping there to eat it, nor can you pass the hexagon occupied by your opponent!

Ebb and Flood: First ebb is fast, but slows down and transforms to flood. During ebb, a number of water hexagons fall dry so more food can be found. 11 hexagons fall dry after the first move, then 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0 new sand spaces after the following moves. During flood, the water comes rushing back in and the seagulls are forced back up the beach. The number of spaces per move covered by water during flood is: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0. These hexagons are drawn randomly by the computer under the restriction that the borderline of the sea/beach is always 12 adjacent spaces wide. You can see how many hexagons change from water to beach, or from beach to water, in the moves list at the right side of the window. Each new sand space has a 40% chance that there is an animal on it. The chance that there appears to be a mussel, shrimp, fish, sea-start or crab is equal.

Swimming: During flood it can happen that the sea streams into your space. Then the spaces you move through the sea and from sea to the sand cost you 2 energy points each instead of 1. When you are on the sand and move through sea spaces towards an animal, then the step from sand into water doesn’t cost an extra energy point.

End of the game: The game ends once both players are back on the 2 start spaces (this 'nest' is a higher spot so it cannot be under water). If one player is back, the turns continue for the other player. If your energy gets down to 0, you loose premature.

Winner of "Beasty Beach": The player with the most energy points at the end wins.
